How much income do you need for a rent?
Multiply the rent by the home's income multiple. At 3×, a $1,950 rent needs $5,850 a month before tax ($70,200 a year); at 2.5× it needs $4,875. Some homes count rent plus mandatory monthly fees, which raises the bar. Paid by the paycheck? Weekly pay times 52, divided by 12, gives your monthly income.

Find homes where you fitThe formula
Income needed per month = multiple × rent (or × rent + mandatory monthly fees)
This is how PropFit works out each home's requirement, rounded up. A home's own listing says which multiple it uses and whether fees count.
Turning your pay into a monthly figure
- Weekly: pay × 52 ÷ 12.
- Every two weeks: pay × 26 ÷ 12. Not × 2: there are 26 paychecks a year, not 24.
- Twice a month: pay × 24 ÷ 12, which is pay × 2.
- Hourly: rate × hours a week × 52 ÷ 12.
- Yearly: salary ÷ 12.
Mixing up every two weeks and twice a month is the most common mistake: at $2,000 a paycheck, it's the difference between $4,333 and $4,000 a month.

How much do I need to earn to rent a $2,000 apartment?
At a 3× rule, $6,000 a month before tax ($72,000 a year). At 2.5×, $5,000 a month. Under the 40× rule, about $6,667 a month ($80,000 a year).
Does the income rule include fees?
It depends on the home. Some count rent only; others count rent plus mandatory monthly fees, which raises the income needed. The calculator shows both.
How do I convert my paycheck to monthly income?
Multiply what you earn per paycheck by the number of paychecks in a year, then divide by 12: weekly pay times 52, every two weeks times 26, twice a month times 24.
Can I combine incomes with a roommate or partner?
Often, but not always. Each home decides whether household incomes can be added together, so check what the listing says.
